Trahan Wins Carpet Capital Classic

Trahan Wins Carpet Capital Classic

Oct. 7, 2001

Dalton, GA – D.J. Trahan fired an even par 72 to take medallist honors at the Carpet Capital Classic in Dalton, GA on Sunday. Trahan finished the 54-hole event at six-under-par 210, a two shot victory over Ryan Hybl of Georgia.

Clemson finished fourth as a team, its team position after each of the three rounds. Georgia Tech won the event (858) , followed by Tennessee (868) and Wake Forest (872). The Tigers were followed by defending NCAA Champion Florida, then Georgia and North Carolina. It was the second straight weekend that the young Tiger team had beaten Florida and Georgia.

It was the second career victory on the collegiate level for Trahan, who won the Las Vegas Intercollegiate his freshman year. The junior finished second at the Ping/Golfweek Preview last weekend at Ohio State.

Trahan had four birdies and no bogeys on the front nine, scoring an impressive 32. The weather became a factor for all the golfers on the back nine and Trahan finished with a 40 for that back side. Still, his rounds of 69-69-72 were good enough to win the event. He was one of just two golfers to shoot par or better all three rounds.

No other Clemson golfer scored 75 or better on Sunday. Senior Tripp James birdied the final hole to finish with a 76. Gregg Jones shot a 77 and finished 15th individually for the 54-holes, while Matt Hendrix had a 78 on Sunday. Freshman Martin Catalioto had a 79 on Sunday.

Clemson made the turn at just two-over par on Sunday, but was 13 over as a team on the back. No Clemson player had better than a 39 on the back side, including Trahan who had a 40 on the back. Most of the other teams in the field had the same frustrations in the windy conditions.
