Track and Field Athletes Among ACC Leaders

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson outdoor track and field teams have several athletes ranked among the top in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The men’s team won its third straight ACC indoor title last month, and the women placed second at the league meet.

Freshman Todd Matthews of Trenton, NJ, leads the league in the 110m hurdles after running a provisional time of 13.90 at the Clemson Relays. Freshman Ian Potter ranks fifth in the event at 14.76. Sophomore Tony Washington is second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.36.

The Clemson 4x100m relay team of Matthews, Potter, Kai Maull and Anthony Moorman ranks third in the ACC with a time of 42.03. The 4x400m relay team of Maull, Moorman, Shawn Crawford and Shaun Murphy leads the league at 3:19.89.

In the field events, freshman Doug Ameigh and junior Bryan Williams are tied for second in the conference at 6’9 3/4″. Freshman Mark Mirabito is fifth at 6’8″. Williams is also second in the triple jump with a mark of 48’6 3/4″. In the pole vault, freshman Adam Edgington ranks sixth with a vault of 14’5 1/4″.

Freshman Keith Rzewuski is second in the shot put (49′ 1/4″), fifth in the hammer (138’8″) and sixth in the discus (143’3″). Senior Tom Hopkins ranks fifth in the shot put at 42’8 3/4″ and is seventh in the hammer at 109’3″. In the javelin competition, Hopkins is fifth with a throw of 181’3″, and freshman Tory Smith is sixth at 179’9″. Sophomore Wade Van Sice ranks seventh (179’1″) and sophomore Rob VanWagening is eighth (176’4″).

In the decathlon, freshman Mark Jellison leads the league after scoring 6320 points at the Clemson Relays. Senior Ron Kennedy ranks second with 6254 points, and Van Sice is fourth with 6060 points.

For the Clemson women’s team, freshman Abbey Hartman ranks seventh in the 5000m with a time of 19:29.90. Sophomore Erika van Reenen ranks fifth in the ACC in the 3000m with a time of 10:09.42. The Tiger 4x100m relay team of Terri Robinson, Shekera Weston, Shonda Cutchin and Nikkie Bouyer is second with a time of 45.36, while the 4x400m relay team (Cutchin, Bouyer, Stephanie Hicks, Weston) leads the conference at 3:44.68.

In the field events, freshman Erin Nett and sophomore Mandy McLane lead the league with a pole vault of 10’11 3/4″. Sophomore Dana Copeland is third in the high jump (5’5 3/4″) and fourth in the long jump (18’7 1/4″). Robinson ranks third in the long jump at 19’3 1/4″, while freshman Sheri Smith is seventh in the event at 17’3 1/2″.

Junior Kammie Blount ranks second in the ACC in the javelin with a throw of 145’9″. In the hammer competition, senior Ann Marie McAuley is second at 145’9″, and senior Julie Polovick ranks third at 134’8″.
