CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson won the doubles point and three singles matches over 30th-ranked Syracuse to secure the 4-3 upset on Sunday at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. With the win, the Tigers improved to 7-5 overall and 5-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Orange fell to 8-5 (2-5 ACC).
In doubles play, the Tigers’ Ayan Broomfield and Fernanda Navarro squared off against the nation’s 26th-ranked doubles team in Syracuse’s Gabriela Knutson and Valeria Salazar at No. 1. The Clemson duo upset the ranked Orange tandem, 6-3, for their second win in two days. At No. 3 doubles, Joana Eidukonyte and Daniela Ruiz started the match down 0-3, before rebounding to win 6-4 and claim the doubles point for the Tigers.
Syracuse opened singles play by tying the team score at 1-1 as Navarro fell to 45th-ranked Anna Shkudun, 6-7(3), 0-6. Broomfield put the Tigers back on top, 2-1, with a 6-4, 7-6(3) win at No. 1, before the Orange tied it with a victory at No. 3 singles. Ally Miller-Krasilnikov rebounded from a 4-6 first-set loss to win the next two sets, 6-3, 6-4. Tristen Dewar then clinched the team victory for Clemson with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
The Tigers travel to California next week for Spring Break, and face #23 Stanford on Sunday, March 20 at 3 p.m. ET in Stanford, Calif.
