Tigers Successful at Occoquan Sprints

FAIRFAX STATION, Va. – For the second time in as many regattas, the Clemson rowing team had a successful outing. All eight Tiger boats finished either first or second in the six races held on Sunday afternoon at the Occoquan Sprints in Fairfax Station, Va.

“I thought we had really good focus as a team this weekend battling through cold temperatures and delays but still coming out with good results,” said senior Samantha Duggan.

In Varsity Eight action, the two Clemson boats each won their respective heats to advance to the final. Clemson (A) won Heat 1 with a time 7:29.35 while Clemson (B) won Heat 2 with a time of 7:33.30. In the V8+ Final, Clemson (A) edged the Tiger (B) boat by eight seconds for the victory with a time of 6:57.91.

Another Tiger 1, 2 finish highlighted the V4+ Final. The crew of Megan Kauffeld, Alexis Georgia, Emily Radziwon and Anna Skochdopole rowed to victory with a time of 8:16.90 while the crew of Kasi Sweisford, Amelia Shein, Sophia Porach, Hannah Maeser and Lydia Hanewich came in second at 8:22.18. ACC-foe North Carolina finished third at 8:48.84.

Sophomore Sabreena Cole and freshman Sarah Decker earned the victory in the 2-, defeating William and Mary and Liberty. The Tiger duo finished a full 1:55.3 ahead of second place William and Mary, finishing with a time of 10:06.70.

Clemson’s 3V8+ rowed to a second place finish behind North Carolina’s 2V8+ who posted a time of 7:19.24. The Tigers’ time of 7:30.16 bested the third place George Mason 3V8+ who completed the race in 7:40.06.

“Our races today showed that our training is paying off,” said senior Kerianne Pacheco. “We’re gearing up for next weekend and are ready to focus on the tough competition we’ll see in Charlottesville.”

Clemson will be back in action in Virginia next week as the Tigers compete in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Saturday, April 4 in Charlottesville. The Tigers will face off against some of the top schools in the country including Ohio State, Michigan and Virginia. Navy will also compete next weekend.
