Tigers Rebound for 5-2 Win over Wake Forest Sunday

CLEMSON, S.C. – One day after suffering a heartbreaking loss, the 21st-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team rebounded in a big way with a 5-2 victory over Wake Forest at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Tigers improved to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in ACC play, while the loss was the first of the year for the Demon Deacons, who fell to 9-1 (0-1 ACC).

For the second straight day, the Tigers won the doubles point with wins on Courts 2 and 3. Tristen Dewar and Ally Miller-Krasilnikov claimed the first win, 6-2, at No. 2. This was followed by a 6-4 victory by Joana Eidukonyte and Daniela Ruiz at No. 3. The score was knotted at 5-5 in Ayan Broomfield and Fernanda Navarro’s match at No. 1 when doubles play was halted.

Wake Forest won the first two singles matches, at No. 6 and No. 4, in that order, to take a 2-1 lead, before Clemson rebounded with four straight singles wins. Broomfield, a freshman, won her second-straight match over a ranked player, and her second-straight match playing at No. 1 singles, defeating #77 Kimmy Guerin in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Next, Dewar defeated her Wake Forest opponent at No. 5, 7-6(4), 7-6(1), and then Navarro clinched the victory at No. 2, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(1). The win was Navarro’s second in a row, and her first since moving up to No. 2 in the singles lineup. Eidukonyte provided the final margin, winning the second and third sets 6-2, 6-2, after dropping a first-set tiebreak.

Clemson returns to action for two home matches next weekend, beginning with North Florida on Friday, Feb. 26 at 2:30 p.m. On Sunday, Feb. 28, the Tigers host NC State at noon.
