Tigers Open Season with Win at Virginia Tech Thursday

BLACKSBURG, Va. – It took all seven points, but the 20th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team opened the 2016 dual-match season with a road win at Virginia Tech on Thursday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va. Freshman Ally Miller-Krasilnikov clinched the 4-3 victory for the Tigers (1-0, 1-0 ACC) with a three-set win at No. 6 singles. The Hokies fell to 2-3 (0-1 ACC) with the loss.

The Tigers claimed the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead in the match. After the No. 2 doubles fell, Clemson’s Ayan Broomfield and Jenny Moinard evened things up with a win on Court 3, 6-4. The point came down to No. 1 doubles, where Joana Eidukonyte and Fernanda Navarro won 6-4 to put the Tigers on the board first.

In singles play, Broomfield was leading 3-0 at No. 2 when her opponent retired due to illness, putting Clemson up 2-0. Following a loss at No. 4 singles, Moinard gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5. Virginia Tech claimed the next two points, with wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles, to knot the team score at 3-3. The match came down to the No. 6 singles contest between Clemson’s Ally Miller-Krasilnikov and the Hokies’ Katherine Butler. The rookie came through for the Tigers, winning in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, to clinch the victory for the team.

Clemson travels to Athens, Ga. on Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest against Georgia. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 2 in the nation according to the ITA poll released earlier this week.
