Tigers Look to Add Regional Qualifiers This Weekend at Georgia Tech Track & Field Invitational

May 15, 2008

Clemson, SC – The Tiger track & field team will compete Friday and Saturday at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, GA, the final meet for Clemson prior to the East Region Championships on May 30-31. Clemson has 15 student-athletes already qualified for regionals, and enters the weekend with the hopes of adding a few more.

The action gets underway Friday at 12:00 noon in the hammer throw, where red-shirt freshman Alex Padgett will attempt to join teammate Zach Berg as a regional qualifier. Padgett, just five inches shy of the required mark, ranks fifth in school history with a personal best throw of 185’11”.

Several field event standouts will be in action Friday, including regional qualifier Joey O’Rourke is scheduled for the pole vault at 6:30 PM as well.

On the track, Clemson’s first competitors will be C.J. Spiller in the 100m dash. Spiller turned in a personal best (10.33) last weekend, a time which ranks fifth in the East Region. Guy needs to pick up just a few hundredths to meet the regional standard of 10.55 seconds. The 100m prelims are scheduled for 7:25 PM Friday evening.

Matt Clark, a likely NCAA qualifier in the 10K, will run the 1500m at 8:10 PM. Clark placed third in the event last weekend at the Orange & Purple Classic. Matt Hughes qualified for regionals in the steeplechase via a time of 9:04.10 at the ACC Championships, but wants to pick up several seconds this weekend in the hopes of moving up the performance chart in the East Region. The men’s steeple will follow the women’s event, which begins at 9:00 Friday night.

Josh Fowler is entered in the triple jump, scheduled for Saturday at 2:00 PM. He owns a season-best, regional-qualifying jump of 49’9.75″. He will be Clemson’s lone field event competitor Saturday.

The men’s quarter mile will follow the women, which begins at 4:00 PM. Cowin Mills has already posted a regional time in the event, but teammate Miller Moss needs to improve by a few tenths on his season-best 47.62 in the event.

Andrew Porter and Travis Swaggard are scheduled for the 400m intermediate hurdles, following the women’s action at 4:10 PM. Swaggard has recorded a regional time, but Porter needs to pick up on his season best if he is to advance for the second straight year in the event.

Travis Padgett, who made national noise last week with a 9.96 in the 100m dash, will focus on improving his 200m time (20.83) Saturday. He will be joined by Guy, Mills, and Spiller, all regional qualifiers as well. The competition will begin following the women’s races at 6:00 PM.

The final event of the weekend for the Tigers will be the 4x400m relay. Clemson qualified for regionals with a time of 3:08.78 at the ACC Championships, but will be running without 400m standout Corey Brown this weekend. The lineup will be comprised of Mills, Moss, Porter, and Swaggard.
