Tigers Lead Lady Paladin Invitational

CLEMSON, S.C. — J.T. Horton’s team fired an opening round two-over par 290 to lead the Lady Paladin Invitational at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C. Clemson is followed closely by New Mexico (+3), Wake Forest (+4) and Missouri (+5).

Freshman Alice Hewson was once again the top player for the Tigers, and sits alone by three shots in first place after an opening round 67. Hewson’s scorecard included five birdies and was bogey-free over 18 holes. The native of the United Kingdom was co-medalist in her first collegiate tournament last week, the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C.

Clemson’s No. 2 golfer Sunday was junior Sloan Shanahan, who posted an even-par 72. The product of Suwanee, Ga., tallied four birdies of her own in the opening round. It was her best round since carding a 72 in the first round of the 2015 ACC Tournament.

Another freshman, Lauren Stephenson, shot two-over par 74 to count as the Tigers’ third player. She posted three birdies on a five-hole stretch on the back side Sunday. Marisa Messana and Lauren Salazar both shot 77, counting one of the five-over par scores.

The teams return to action for the second round of the event on Monday. Live scoring is available at BirdieFire.com.
