Sunset, S.C.—Alice Hewson shot a four-under par 68 on Sunday to improve 23 positions individually and finish in eighth place at the Clemson Invitational at The Reserve at Lake Keowee in Sunset, S.C. The Tigers finished ninth as a team in the field of 17 teams.
Florida State won the event that included seven of the top 30 teams in the nation with a 54-hole score of 10-under-par 854. It was the sixth win of the year for the sixth ranked (Golfstat) Seminoles team.
Furman, ranked eighth in the nation entering the tournament, finished second for the second year in a row with an 856 score, eight-under-par, while Florida, ranked fifth in the nation, finished third at 857.
Texas, ranked #21 in the nation, was fourth with an 864 score, while Michigan State was fifth at 869. Oklahoma, ranked #24 entering the tournament, was sixth at 872 and Tennessee was a shot back at 873. Houston was eighth at 881, while Clemson was ninth just a shot back at 882. Clemson was six shots better than 10th place Ohio State.
Florida State’s Matilda Castren won the tournament with a nine-under-par score of 207. She won the event in a strong field that included 24 of the top 100 players in the nation according to Golfstat.
One of those top 100 players was Clemson’s Hewson, who had the best round of the day among the 94 competitors. The Clemson sophomore played the front nine in three-under-par 33 thanks to birdies on the fourth, seven and ninth holes. She chipped in from 15 yards off the green for birdie on No. 4 and that got her round going. She had five birdies and a bogey on the day in recording her best round since scoring a 68 on Feb. 7 at the UCF Challenge in Orlando.
Sydney Legacy also had a top 25 finish for Clemson. Legacy had a 76 on Sunday after scoring consecutive rounds of 71 to open the tournament. She finished 22nd overall, her best finish since a No. 18 ranking at the Schooner Fall Classic that opened the season.
Freshman Ana Paula Valdes was third among Clemson players over the weekend with a 224 total, eight over par. Her best round was on Saturday when she fired a one under par 71. Junior Marisa Messana improved each round and finished with a 74 on Sunday, second best among Clemson golfers. She had a 226 total for the event. Freshman Kennedy Swann had a 76 on Sunday to finish at 228.
One of the highlights of the day among the individual golfers came at the par four eighth hole when Clemson’s McKenzie Talbert made an eagle two when she put the ball in the hole on a second hop from 106 yards with a pitching wedge. It was the only eagle among the 94 players who played 5,040 holes during the three days of the tournament.
Senior Jessica Hoang played the 100th round of her Clemson career on Sunday, the most in Clemson history, and scored a 75 as an individual. She finished with a 227 total for the 54 holes. Freshman Ashley Czarnecki finished with a 232 score for the 54 holes, including a season best 74 in the opening round.
