Tigers Fall to No. 2 Georgia in Athens Saturday

ATHENS, Ga. – The nation’s second-ranked team proved to be too much for the 20th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team, as the Bulldogs blanked the Tigers, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon in Athens, Ga. The loss dropped Clemson to 1-1 on the season, while Georgia remained undefeated, improving to 3-0.

The Bulldogs won the doubles point, by virtue wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions. At No. 1, the Tigers’ Joana Eidukonyte and Fernanda Navarro squared off against the 14th-ranked doubles team in the nation, in Ellen Perez and Mariana Gould, falling 6-3. At No. 3 doubles, Clemson’s Ayan Broomfield and Daniela Ruiz were in a battle, trailing 4-5 against their Bulldog opponents, when play was halted.

Georgia claimed singles victories, at No. 4, 3 and 2, in that order, to clinch the team victory. At No. 2, the Tigers’ Broomfield, unranked in singles play, won the first set over 22nd-ranked Caroline Brinson of Georgia, 6-4, before falling in the next two. The Bulldogs went on to win at No. 1, 6 and 5 singles to complete the sweep.

The Tigers return to action on Friday, Feb. 5 when they host UNC Wilmington. The match, which was rescheduled after being postponed on Jan. 23 due to weather, will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center.
