Tigers Fall to Maryland 4-1 in College Park Sunday Afternoon

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Clemson women’s soccer team fell to Maryland by a score of 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field in College Park, MD.  The loss dropped the Tigers’ record to 5-3-2 overall (0-2 ACC), while the Terrapins improved to 6-2-1 overall (2-0 ACC) with the win.

Maryland scored twice early in the first half, on goals by Becky Kaplan in the sixth minute and Danielle Hubka in the 19^th minute, and took a 2-0 lead into halftime.  Hayley Brock netted a goal for the Terrapins at the 73:23 mark.

At the 74:30 mark, sophomore defender Savannah Coiner put Clemson on the scoreboard.  Coiner’s goal, which was her first of the year, came on a free kick from 35 yards which she sent into the top right corner of the net.  Olivia Wagner capped off the scoring with a goal in the 76^th minute, giving Maryland the 4-1 lead.

For the game, Clemson took 13 shots and had six corner kicks, compared to Maryland’s 12 shots and two corner kicks.  There were 11 fouls called on the Tigers and 15 on the Terrapins in the contest.

“The difference in the game was that Maryland took advantage of their chances and we did not take advantage of ours,” said Head Coach Eddie Radwanski.  “We had good opportunities in the first half and a great opportunity to start the second half.  We have to score in those moments.  It changes the game.  Defensively, we need to be more responsible and smarter in key situations.

“It certainly doesn’t get any easier with Virginia up next.”

After playing four straight games on the road, the Tigers will return to Historic Riggs Field on Sunday, September 23 to play host to #8 Virginia.  The game between Clemson and the Cavaliers will begin at 1:00 PM.  Admission is free to all Clemson women’s soccer home games.
