Tigers Eliminate Host Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) – A Clemson 12-4 victory over Arkansas on Saturday in the NCAA Regional eliminated the host team.

Clemson (39-25) advances to play Southwest Missouri State in the championship game. On Friday, the Tigers lost to Southwest Missouri State 23-5. They must beat the Bears twice to claim the championship.

Steve Reba (5-4) got Saturday night’s win. Dan Wright (1-8) took the loss for Arkansas (42-23).

In the bottom of the first, Clemson’s Jason Harris drove in Henri Stanley, who reached on a walk, with a sacrifice fly.

The teams traded scoreless innings until the bottom of the fifth when Stanley belted an 0-2 fastball from Wright over the rightfield wall. It was Stanley’s seventh homerun on the season.

Back to back doubles by Harris and Khali Greene gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead. Brian Ellis then singled home Greene.

Justin Singleton doubled home Ellis and that was the end of the night for Wright. Greg Gilleland came in and finished the inning with the Razorbacks trailing 6-0.

After only allowing one hit through four innings, Wright allowed six hits and five runs in the fifth.

In the sixth inning, Arkansas’ Scott Crossett knocked in Rodney Nye on a groundball. But Clemson got two more runs in the bottom of the inning as Greene hit his second double of the night, scoring Stanley and Boyd.

Arkansas added two runs in the top of the seventh, but Clemson responded with three runs upping its lead to 11-4. Arkansas added a run in the top of the eighth on a Ike Pohle homerun to end scoring for the Razorbacks. The Tigers added another run in the bottom of the eighth.
