Tigers Edged by South Carolina in Columbia Saturday

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team won the doubles point, but lost four of six singles matches on the road Saturday afternoon, falling to South Carolina by a score of 4-3. With the loss, the Tigers fell to 2-3 on the season, while the Gamecocks improved to 7-2.

The Tigers were solid in doubles play. The Gamecocks took the match at No. 1 doubles, but Clemson’s No. 2 and 3 teams won their matches to clinch the doubles point. Tristen Dewar and Ally Miller-Krasilnikov won first, at No. 2, by a score of 6-4. Shortly after, Joana Eidukonyte and Daniela Ruiz took their match at No. 3, 6-4.

Fernanda Navarro, ranked 75th nationally, gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead with a quick 6-3, 6-1 victory over 110th-ranked Ingrid Gamarra Martins at No. 3 singles. The Gamecocks put a point on the board with a win at No. 5, and then Ayan Broomfield stepped up for an impressive 6-4, 6-3 victory over Paige Cline at No. 1. It was Broomfield’s first match playing at the top singles position for the Tigers, and the freshman rose to the occasion with the straight-set win over 50th-ranked Cline.

South Carolina rebounded with wins at No. 4 and 2 singles, respectively, and the match came down to the result at No. 6 singles, and Ally Miller-Krasilnikov. The freshman from Delray Beach, Fla. lost the first set to the Gamecock senior, Ximena Siles Luna, 6-4, and then came back to take the second, 6-2. In the third set, Miller-Krasilnikov trailed 5-1 and showed great heart in fighting all the way back to 5-5 before eventually falling, 7-5.

The Tigers return to action in less than 24 hours, when they host Wake Forest on Sunday, Feb. 20. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
