Tigers Edged By #3 Georgia Tech In Wednesday Women’s Tennis Action

ATLANTA, GA – The #22 Clemson women’s tennis team narrowly missed upsetting third-ranked Georgia Tech in its ACC opener on Wednesday afternoon, falling by a 4-3 margin in Atlanta, GA. The win bettered the Yellow Jackets’ overall record to 6-1, 1-0 in the ACC, while the loss dropped the Tigers to 4-3 on the year and 0-1 in the conference.

Carol Salge and Federica van Adrichem won their fifth consecutive doubles match and second straight over a top-15 team with an 8-5 victory over Georgia Tech’s 11th-ranked team of Kristi Miller and Lyndsay Shosho at the flight one position. The Tigers’ Daniela Alvarez and Alexandra Luc picked up their fourth win of the season at flight two, upsetting #55 Kelly Anderson and Whitney McCray by a score of 8-6. The Yellow Jackets avoided the doubles sweep with a win at the third position as Alison Silverio and Kacie Anson defeated Maria Brito and Marie Scriba, 8-6.

Silverio picked up Georgia Tech’s first point of the match with a 6-3, 6-2, win over Salge at the flight three singles position. Sixth-ranked Miller then defeated #42 van Adrichem in the top slot by a score of 6-4, 6-1. Clemson’s Brito claimed the flight four match-up over #60 Kelly Anderson, 6-4, 6-2, for the Tigers’ second point.

The Yellow Jackets then took a 3-2 lead in the contest with a victory at flight six, as Christy Striplin won a 7-6, 6-0 decision over Scriba. Luc knotted the match at three points apiece by defeating Whitney McCray at flight five (2-6, 6-3, 6-4) before Lyndsay Shosho, ranked #74, then clinched the match for Georgia Tech with a hard-fought, three-set win over Daniela Alvarez at flight two, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.

The Tigers will head north for the weekend for matches against Harvard and Brown. Clemson will face the Crimson on Saturday in Cambridge, MA and the Bears on Sunday in Providence, RI.
