Tigers Down UNC Wilmington in First Home Dual Match

CLEMSON, S.C. – After narrowly winning the doubles point, the Clemson women’s tennis rebounded convincingly in singles play to defeat UNC Wilmington by a final score of 6-1 on Friday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. With the win, the 20^th-ranked Tigers improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Seahawks fell to 0-2 with the loss.

UNC Wilmington struck first in doubles, winning on Court 3 by a score of 6-4. Shortly thereafter, the Tigers’ number-two doubles team of Tristen Dewar and Jenny Moinard evened the match with a 6-4 victory, leaving the doubles point decision up to Joana Eidukonyte and Fernanda Navarro on Court 1. The pair was in a battle against their Seahawk opponents, but ultimately prevailed in a tiebreak, winning 7-6(6).

After the extremely tight doubles contest, the Tigers rebounded in a big way in singles play, winning three matches in straight sets to clinch the overall victory. Daniela Ruiz claimed the first win at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1, followed by Ayan Broomfield at No. 2, 6-0, 6-3. Navarro then clinched the victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. Eidukonyte and Dewar went on to win their matches on Court 1 and 4, respectively, to provide the final margin of 6-1.

The Tigers have a week off before they head to Gainesville, Fla. to face the nation’s third-ranked team, Florida. The match between Clemson and the Gators will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 14.
