Tigers Down Louisville Saturday Afternoon

CLEMSON, S.C. – The 15th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team defeated the Louisville Cardinals 7-0 at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. It was the first-ever meeting between the two programs. With the win, the Tigers move to 8-5 on the season and 4-1 in the ACC, while Louisville falls to 10-8 and 2-4 in the conference.

In doubles action, the Tigers got out to quick starts on all three courts. Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies, ranked first nationally, finished off their opponents at No. 1 with a convincing 8-2 win. With the win, the duo improves to 22-1 and remains a perfect 10-0 in dual matches. They are currently on a 13-match win streak. The pairs of Tristen Dewar and Romy Koelzer and Joana Eidukonyte and Daniela Ruiz were both in contention to clinch the doubles point for Clemson. Ultimately, Dewar and Koelzer locked it up with an 8-4 win on court two. Eidukonyte and Ruiz were leading 7-4 but their match went unfinished after Dewar and Koelzer sealed the deal.

The Tigers won all six singles matches in straight sets. Yuilynn Miao got the winning started with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6. No. 58 Koelzer, playing at No. 1, won 6-1, 6-1 to keep the momentum going before Ruiz clinched the match with 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5. Rompies (6-2, 6-1), No. 119 Gumulya (6-3, 6-3) and Eidukonyte (6-0, 6-2) all followed with wins of their own. Eidukonyte, the Tigers’ highest ranked player at No. 20, moves to 22-5 on the year and 9-2 in dual matches.

The Tigers have a week off from play, returning to action on the road Monday, March 16 against College of Charleston. The match is slated for 2 p.m.
