Tigers Defeat Notre Dame 5-2 Sunday in Anderson, SC

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team won its second ACC match of the weekend on Sunday afternoon, defeating Notre Dame 5-2 at the AU Tennis Facility in Anderson, S.C. With the win, the Tigers improved to 10-9 (3-5 ACC), while the Irish dropped to 10-8 (2-6 ACC).

Clemson won the doubles point, for the 12th time on the season, against the Irish. Juniors Marie-Alexandre Leduc and Fernanda Navarro were the first to claim a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. The duo, ranked 34th nationally, improved to 18-5 overall, 10-2 in dual matches and 5-0 in ACC dual matches with the win, which was their eighth in a row. Sophomores Sydney Riley and Tate Schroeder clinched the doubles point for Clemson, winning 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

The Irish won the first of the six singles matches in straight sets at No. 5, but Clemson followed with three-straight wins to clinch the match. Navarro won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2, followed by Leduc with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 1. It was the fourth-consecutive singles win for both Navarro and Leduc. Riley clinched the team victory for the Tigers, 7-6(5), 6-1, at No. 4 singles. The Irish came back and won at No. 3 singles, and senior Daniela Ruiz provided the fifth point for Clemson, winning in a third-set tiebreak, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5), at No. 6 singles. It was Ruiz’s fourth-straight singles win as well.

The Tigers have two ACC matches on the road next week, as they travel to Pittsburgh on Friday, April 6 for a 4 p.m. contest against the Panthers. On Sunday, April 8, Clemson faces Duke in Durham at 2 p.m. The Blue Devils are currently ranked fourth in the nation.
