Tigers Complete Day One at ACCs

Feb. 15, 2012

CHRISTIANSBURG, VA – The Clemson women’s swimming and diving team sits in tenth place after day one of the ACC Championships. The Tigers competed in the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay on Wednesday at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center, and they finished the first day of the four-day meet with 38 points. Virginia has the early lead with 80 points.

“It was a solid start for the Tigers,” Head Coach Christopher Ip said. “We posted our best relay times of the season. Kristen Redmond lead off with a personal best time in the 800 free relay that places her in our top times list.”

To begin the meet, Kelly Fowler, Maddie Tarantolo, Sarah Bechard, and Meg Anderson swam the 200 medley relay in 1:42.44, which was good enough for tenth place and 14 points. It was an NCAA-B time that fell beneath the team’s previous best this season by two seconds.

The Tigers closed the night with a seventh-place finish in the 800 free relay. The crew of Redmond, Kelsey Krauss, Anderson, and Tori Cervone finished the event with a time of 7:22.70, which was more than ten seconds better than the previous low time this season. Redmond’s leadoff split of 1:48.24 was her personal best, moving her up to fifth on Clemson’s all-time list in the 200 free.

Clemson will return to the pool tomorrow for day two of the conference championships. Preliminary heats will begin at 11 a.m., while finals will begin with the one-meter dive at 5 p.m. and the swimming events at 7 p.m. Among the featured events will be the 500 free, the 200 IM, the 50 free, and the 200 free relay.
