Tigers’ Brito and Coin To Compete At ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships

CLEMSON, SC – Clemson’s Maria Brito and Julie Coin are scheduled to compete at the 2003 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan’s Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, MI on Nov. 6-9. Coin will compete in the singles draw, while she and Brito will represent the Tigers in the doubles competition.

This will be Coin’s second national championship tournament of the season in singles, as she reached the semifinals of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, CA earlier this season. The junior from Amiens, France, who is ranked 13th in the ITA preseason poll, defeated seventh-ranked Daria Panova of Oregon, 59th-ranked Jennifer Magley of Florida and 14th-ranked Jackie Carlton of UCLA en route to the semifinal match. In the semifinals, Coin fell to the tournament’s second seed, Raquel Kops-Jones of California, suffering her only loss of the fall season.

Brito and Coin qualified for the national tournament after winning the ITA Southeast Regional Doubles Championship earlier this fall in Winston-Salem, NC. The pair won five matches en route to the regional title, defeating 30th-ranked Kruse and Venter of Middle Tennessee in the semifinals and Wake Forest’s Coetzee and Smith in the championship match. The duo is ranked 29th according to the ITA preseason poll and has an 8-2 overall record so far this fall.
