Tigers Battle Tough Competition, Finish Fourth at ACC Championships

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson women’s rowing team battled stiff competition in the finals of the ACC Championships to finish fourth overall on Saturday on Lake Hartwell. The Tigers recorded 48 points on the day after finishing fourth in three of four races.

Following the championship, Samantha Duggan was named first-team All-ACC while Paula Wesselmann was named second-team All-ACC. It was the first time earning All-ACC honors for both.

The highlight of the day came with an exciting First Varsity 8+ grand final in the final race of the championship. The Tigers’ 1V8 battled Syracuse and Duke each fighting for third place behind Virginia and Notre Dame. In the end, Clemson pushed Syracuse right to the finish and held off Duke to come in fourth.

Clemson started the day with a fourth-place finish in the Third Varsity 8+ final. The Tigers held off Duke for fourth but could not cut in to the Syracuse lead for third place.

The Tigers’ Second Varsity 8+ also finished fourth in the grand final. Clemson overcame a slow start to overtake Miami early and finish comfortably ahead of the Canes and Boston College.

The First Varsity 4+ finished fifth in their grand final.  The Tigers made a push late in an effort to overtake Duke but finish just a few second behind the Blue Devils.

Virginia finish first with 80 points to win its 14th ACC Championship while Notre Dame came in second in its first season in the ACC. Clemson is still the only school to knock off Virginia when it won its only title in 2009.
