Tiger Women’s Tennis To Play Host To In-State Rival South Carolina

Feb. 24, 2007

CLEMSON, SC – The 12th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team (6-2) will play host to in-state rival South Carolina, ranked #34, on Sunday afternoon at the Hoke SLoan Tennis Center. The teams will take to the court at 2:00 pm. The Gamecocks enter the Feb. 19 week of play with a 5-0 record and will travel to NC State on Saturday before their battle with Clemson.

The match will be the 42nd meeting between the two schools in a series that dates back to 1976. South Carolina won last year’s contest by a 4-3 margin in Columbia to take a 22-19 lead in the series score. However, the Tigers hold a 10-7 advantage in matches played on their home court and won the last meeting in Clemson, defeating the Gamecocks, 5-2, in the 2005 season.

Four Tiger players boast national rankings, led by Carol Salge’s #44 listing. Salge owns a 9-7 overall record for the 2006-07 season, while freshman Ani Mijacika, who was ranked 47th in the most recent Fila/ITA Tennis singles poll, has compiled a 10-5 overall mark with a 5-2 ledger in dual matches. Clemson’s doubles team of Mijacika and Federica van Adrichem upset the #23-ranked team from Georgia earlier this week to improve to 4-2 on the year.
