Tiger Women’s Tennis Defeats Virginia, 5-2, On Saturday

CHARLOTTSVILLE, VA – Ani Mijacika remained undefeated in ACC singles action as the Tiger women’s tennis team defeated Virginia, 5-2, at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, VA on Saturday afternoon. Clemson improved to 18-3 overall and 9-1 in league play with the win, while the Cavaliers fell to 10-9 on the year with a 4-6 ledger against conference foes.

Mijacika dropped the first set to Jennifer Stevens at the flight one position before rebounding to easily defeat the Virginia player in the second and third frames (4-6, 6-1, 6-0). The win was the Makarska, Croatia native’s 13th straight to improve her singles record to 23-5 for the year. Carol Salge then won her flight two match-up for Clemson, posting a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Maggie Yahner. At the number three position, Estefania Balda won over Kristen McVitty in straight sets (6-1, 6-2), while Federica van Adrichem also posted a two-set win at the flight for position, defeating Lindsey Pereira, 6-4, 6-2.

The Cavaliers scored their two points of the afternoon at the flight five and six positions. Maria Brito fell to Amanda Rales, 6-1, 6-4 at number five, while Carolina Hammond defeated Ina Hadziselimovic at the sixth position, 6-2, 6-4.

The Tigers led, 1-0, in the match after winning their 17th doubles point of the season. Clemson’s ninth-ranked tandem of Mijacika and van Adrichem claimed an 8-6 decision over Alexander and Hammond at flight one, while Salge and Brito posted the victory against Pereira and Rales by the same margin in the number three match-up. The Cavaliers then took the second position contest as McVitty and Stevens edged Balda and Hadziselimovic, 9-7.

The Tigers will play for a share of the ACC title on Sunday morning as they conclude the 2007 regular season against Virginia Tech. The teams are slated for a 10:30 am start time from Blacksburg, VA.
