CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s soccer team fell to ninth-ranked Florida State on Thursday night at Historic Riggs Field by a score of 5-1. Freshman forward Maddy Elder scored her 10th goal of the season in the Tiger loss.

With the loss, Clemson falls to 3-11 overall and 0-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Seminoles improve to 11-2-1 (4-1-1 ACC) with the win.

Tiffany McCarty put Florida State on the board just three and a half minutes into the game. The remainder of the first half was scoreless and the Seminoles took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Florida State scored four times in the second half on two goals by Jessica Price and one each by Ines Jaurena and McCarty.

Elder put the Tigers on the board in the 70th minute with her 10th goal of the year. Senior midfielder Katie Vogel dribbled the ball up the field and sent a pass out wide to junior forward Samantha Fortier. Fortier passed the ball into the box for Elder, who launched it into the net past Seminole keeper Erin McNulty.

“This is a team sport and we cannot continue to play as a group of individuals without everyone doing their job,” said Head Coach Hershey Strosberg. “Florida State is a good team and I certainly don’t want to take anything away from them. They were the better team tonight.

“It is disappointing to see us not have the collective effort and responsibility to each other as teammates. We were able to put one good play together for a goal, but when you are already down, that has far less meaning. We are going to continue to learn from this, even if it’s the hard way.”

Clemson will return to action on Sunday, October 18 when it plays host to Duke. The game between the Tigers and the Blue Devils will kick off at 2:00 PM and will be broadcast live on the internet on TigerCast.
