Tiger Volleyball Team Drops Final Match At Powerbar Tournament

BOULDER, CO – The Clemson volleyball team lost a heartbreaking 2-3 decision to 24th-ranked Loyola Marymount University Sunday afternoon in its final match of the Colorado Powerbar Tournament. The Tigers won the first game 33-31, dropped game two 24-30 and won the third game 30-25. LMU slipped by Clemson 31-29 in game four and then claimed the victory by defeating Clemson 15-12 in the fifth and decisive game.

The Tigers recorded a .213 hitting percentage for the match while holding the Lions to a hitting percentage of .200. Clemson recorded 12 team blocks, and Loyola Marymount tallied 13.5 team blocks. LMU edged Clemson in service aces with nine, while the Tigers recorded seven aces.

Jodi Steffes led the Tiger hitters with a season-high 26 kills, and added 15 digs with three blocks and three service aces. Ryane Beasley also tallied a double-double with 15 kills and 20 digs with three blocks (one solo). Jessi Betcher led Clemson in digs with 22, and had a team-high 58 assists. Meredith Kirtland added 15 digs and two service aces for the Tigers, and Tami BySura recorded 12 digs.

Loyola Marymount had three hitters in double-figures, led by Kristin Gallup who tallied 26 kills with a team-high 23 digs and three service aces. Tiana Newsome and Dina DeBernardi added 17 kills each, while Nicole Oehlman recorded a match-high 67 assists with 12 digs. Newsome also led the Lions in blocks with ten (one solo).

Clemson (1-2) will travel to the University of Georgia on Wednesday, Sept. 5, for a 7:00 p.m. match.
