Tiger Volleyball Team Drops ACC Opener, 3-2

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson volleyball team lost a heartbreaking 3-2 (30-28, 23-30, 22-30, 30-25, 12-15) decision to Wake Forest to open its 2001 ACC schedule. The Tigers fall to 4-4 on the season and 0-1 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons improve to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the league.

The numbers for both teams were almost even as the Tigers hit .222 for the match while the Demon Deacons posted a .207 hitting percentage. Clemson tallied 80 digs for the match, compared to Wake Forest’s 85. The Tiger recorded 14 team blocks, and the Demon Deacons tallied 10 team blocks.

Clemson was led by Jodi Steffes who tallied 24 kills with 16 digs and five blocks. Meredith Kirtland was the only other Tiger in double-figure kills with 14 and 11 digs. Jessi Betcher dished out 60 assists with 14 digs, two aces and four blocks, while Lori Ashton and Marija Zoric added seven blocks each.

Wake Forest’s Trina Maso de Moya recorded 23 kills with 23 digs, seven service aces and three blocks (one solo). Margaret Davidson tallied 18 kills and five blocks (one solo), while Ashley Fisher also added a double-double with 13 kills and 21 digs. Ashlee Phillips handed out 67 assists with 15 digs and two service aces.

The Tigers will play host to Florida State on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free to all Clemson home matches.
