Tiger Baseball Sweeps Stetson

March 8, 1998

CLEMSON, SC —-Clemson swept two games over Stetson Sunday afternoon at Tiger Field by scores of 10-5 and 9-4.

Clemson improves to 16-2. Stetson falls to 10-10.

Junior Matt Padgett had five hits in eight at bats Sunday. Padgett had a home run, a triple, two doubles, and a single on the day. The Lexington, SC native also had four RBIs and scored four runs in the two games.

In game one, Clemson scored six runs after Stetson took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Peter Nystrom’s double and Brian Ellis’ single drove in two key runs in the three-run fourth inning.

The Tigers added four runs in the sixth inning to break the game open. Padgett’s two-RBI double highlighted the uprising. Sammy Serrano led the Hatters with four hits, including two doubles.

Starter Skip Browning (3-0) picked up the win by pitching five innings. Matt Additon picked up his first save of the season. Mike Perkins (2-2) took the loss for the Hatters.

In game two, Padgett’s opposite-field two-run home run put the Tigers ahead 5-3 in the sixth inning. Brooks Stephens homered to start the seventh to cut the Clemson lead to 5-4, but Stetson could get no closer. Clemson added four runs in the bottom of the eighth before the game was called due to rain.

Starter Mike Paradis (3-0) picked up the win by pitching seven innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs, while striking out eight Hatter batters. Scott Clackum picked up his fourth save of the season. Starter Jeff House (2-3) suffered the loss.

Patrick Boyd led the Tigers with two hits and four RBIs. Brooks Stephens was a perfect 2-for-2 with a homer and three RBIs for Stetson.

Clemson will play host to Coastal Carolina on Tuesday at 3:00 PM.
