Three Tigers Drafted on Day 3 & Six Overall

CLEMSON, S.C. – Three Tigers were chosen on the third and final day of the major league draft Saturday. Junior catcher/outfielder Garrett Boulware (Anderson, S.C.) was drafted in the 16th round (No. 485 overall pick) by the Cincinnati Reds, junior infielder/outfielder Jay Baum (Alpharetta, Ga.) was picked in the 21st round (No. 621 overall pick) by the Seattle Mariners and sophomore lefthander Matthew Crownover (Ringgold, Ga.) was selected in the 21st round (No. 628 overall pick) by the San Francisco Giants.

Second-round pick Daniel Gossett, eighth-round pick Steve Wilkerson and ninth-round selection Matt Campbell joined Boulware, Baum and Crownover as the Tigers’ six draft picks in 2014. Clemson’s six selections tied for 15th-most in the nation.

Boulware, the first Tiger taken by the Reds since 2002 (Jarrod Schmidt), was a team co-captain and Second-Team All-ACC selection in 2014. He hit .302 with 16 doubles, four homers, 35 RBIs, 29 walks against only 24 strikeotus and one steal in 61 games.

Baum, the first Clemson player chosen by the Mariners since 2012 (Dominic Leone), was a Gregg Olson Award Watch List member in 2014. He batted .293 with 16 doubles, two triples, one homer, 29 RBIs, 19 walks against only 19 strikeouts and eight steals in 61 games. He also hit a team-high .317 with an ACC-high-tying 11 doubles in ACC regular-season contests.

Crownover, the first Tiger picked by the Giants since 2007 (Andy D’Alessio), was a Third-Team All-ACC selection in 2014. He had an 8-6 record, a 2.90 ERA and .251 opponents’ batting average in 99.1 innings pitched over 17 appearances (16 starts). He also had 90 strikeouts against only 20 walks, an outstanding 4.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In his two-year career, he is 15-9 with a 2.60 ERA and 135 strikeouts against only 37 walks.
