Three Clemson Volleyball Players Selected To 2002 All-ACC Team

CLEMSON, S.C. – Three Clemson volleyball players were named to the 2002 All-ACC Volleyball team, as selected by the league’s nine head coaches. Lori Ashton, Jessi Betcher and Kristin Swanson each earned all-conference honors. Duke and Georgia Tech had four athletes named to the team, followed by Clemson and North Carolina with three each, and Maryland and Virginia added two athletes apiece. Florida State and Wake Forest had one selection each.

The Tigers’ Lori Ashton was named to the first team, after earning all-freshman team honors last season. She completed the regular season with the ACC’s top hitting percentage. The sophomore from Waldorf, MD, posted a .377 hitting percentage through the regular season matches, and ranked fifth in the league in kills with a 3.85 kills per game average and 474 kills. Ashton is Clemson’s leader in all-time hitting percentage with a .339 hitting percentage and ranks seventh in kills per game with a 3.21 average.

Senior Jessi Betcher was selected to the second team, earning her second all-conference accolade. The native of Boulder, CO, is Clemson’s all-time leader in assists and assists per game. She holds an 11.92 assists per game average, with 5,246 total assists. This season, she has handed out 1,490 assists. She is also ranks fifth on Clemson’s all-time career digs list with 1,251. Betcher was the ACC Rookie of the Year in 1999 and also was selected as the AVCA District III Freshman of the Year.

Freshman Kristin Swanson was named to the all-freshman team after hitting .242 for the season. She has 50 blocks and entered the Clemson record books with a .923 hitting percentage (12-0-13) against Wofford. That performance also placed her first in match records for best hitting percentage.
