BATON ROUGE, LA – The Clemson men’s track and field team opened competition at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday night. The Tigers’ Dwight Thomas and the 4x100m relay team advanced to the finals of their events.

Thomas competed in the preliminaries of the 200m dash, recording a time of 20.52. He finished second in his heat and qualified for Saturday’s finals with the sixth-fastest time in the field. His qualifying time is the second-fastest time he has posted this season.

The Tigers’ 4x100m relay team recorded its fastest time of the season. Airese Currie, Otto Spain, Jacey Harper and Thomas posted a time of 38.96, finishing second in their heat. That mark was the third-fastest recorded in Wednesday’s preliminaries, and is only four-hundredths of a second off the Clemson record of 38.92 set in 1997 by Williams, Wheeler, Chambers and Allen.

Todd Matthews will compete in the preliminaries of the 110m hurdles on Thursday, while Thomas will compete in the preliminaries of the 100m dash and Ato Modibo will compete in the 400m dash preliminaries. The Tigers’ 4x400m relay team of Harper, Thomas, Spain and Modibo will also be in action on Thursday in the preliminaries of the that event.
