Sturgis Leads U.S. to Victory Over Egypt

June 20, 2005

Enschede, Holland - Nathan Sturgis continues to grow stronger each game that he plays for the Under 20 World Young Cup. The U.S. team defeated Egypt 1-0, taking the title of their group, Group D “Group of Death.” The U.S. team will now advance to the second round of the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship against Italy Tuesday, June 21 at 5:30 p.m. local time.

Nathan Sturgis was the defensive leader for the U.S., providing an impressive performance from his central back position. With Sturgis leading the defense, he had a calming influence on his teammates, which lead to Egypt only being allowed one shot on goal the entire 90 minutes of play.

Sturgis almost led to a goal right before half when he played to the ball to Brad Evans on the left sideline but Evans’ shot hit the crossbar. Jacob Peterson scored the only goal of the game as he headed in a deflection after a shot by Freddy Adu.

This now makes the third straight shutout by the US team, in as many games, and marks only the 12th team in the tournament’s 28-year history to manage the feat.
