Spiller Donates $100,000 to One Clemson Fund

CLEMSON, SC – Former Clemson All-American C.J. Spiller had one more shocking move for fans at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The difference was this move took place at halftime of the Clemson vs. Maryland game.

After having his number-28 retired during halftime ceremonies at the 28-yard line near the home sidelines, Spiller presented Clemson President James Barker and Athletic Director Terry Don Phillips with a check for $100,000 for the “One Clemson Fund”.

Spiller, now a member of the Buffalo Bills who was the number-nine selection of the 2010 NFL draft, was presented with a framed #28 Clemson jersey on Saturday at halftime of the Clemson vs. Maryland game. He is just the third Clemson football player to have his number retired. Steve Fuller, who wore number-four from 1975-78 and Banks McFadden, who wore number 66 from 1937-39, are the other two.

Spiller was also honored as Clemson’s IPTAY Athlete of the Year for 2009-10 and was presented with a resolution by the Clemson Board of Trustees during a private ceremony on Saturday.

“I am proud to be a Clemson graduate,” said Spiller. “This is my school and I am very appreciate of the positive effect Clemson has had on my life. I want to give back and say thanks. “

Spiller graduated in three and a half years and received his undergraduate degree last December. One of the most respected Clemson athletes of his generation, Spiller received a standing ovation from the Clemson Board of Trustees when he received his diploma.

Spiller was named the ACC Player of the Year last year as a senior when he set an ACC record for All-Purpose yards and led the Tigers to the Atlantic Division Championship of the Atlantic Coast Conference. He finished sixth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy, tied for the highest finish by a Clemson player in history.
