Clemson, SC-Clemson running back C.J. Spiller has been named one of 15 “Players to Watch” in the race for the 2009 Walter Camp Player of the Year Award. The list was announced Wednesday by the Walter Camp Foundation. A list of five finalists will be announced on December 2. The 2009 Walter Camp Player of the Year will be announced on December 10 on ESPN and the winner will receive his trophy at the Foundation’s annual awards banquet in New Haven, CT on January 16, 2010.

Spiller was the only ACC player on the list. The others listed include Toby Gerhart of Stanford, Mardy Gilyard of Cincinnati, Jerry Hughes of TCU, Mark Ingram of Alabama, Case Keenum of Houston, Dion Lewis of Pittsburgh, Rolando McClain of Alabama, Colt McCoy of Texas, Kellen Moore of Boise State, Jacquizz Rodgers of Oregon State, Jordan Shipley of Texas, Ndamukong Suh of Nebraska, Golden Tate of Notre Dame and Tim Tebow of Florida.

Spiller ranks third in the nation in all-purpose running with an average of 195 yards per game. He is one of two players nationally to score at least one touchdown in every game this year. He enters Saturday’s game with Virginia with 836 yards rushing, 382 yards receiving, 543 yards on kickoff returns and 191 yards on punt returns.

Spiller has had two 300-yard all-purpose running games, one each against Miami (FL) and Florida State. He has three kickoff returns for touchdowns this year and has a 34-yard average, fourth best in the nation. He needs just 140 all-purpose running yards to become just the fifth player in NCAA FBS history to reach 7000 all-purpose yards in a career.
