The Clemson rowing program played host to its eighth annual Class Day Regatta on Lake Hartwell on Saturday. The senior boat, dressed in “Wizard of Oz” costume, claimed the class day race over the juniors and sophomores in the main event. The event also served as the program’s fall parents’ weekend.

“The class day race was spectacular,” said Susie Lueck, head coach of the Tigers. “The costumes were creative and the atmosphere was festive. The parents had a great time watching their daughters’ creativity and competition. The themes and outfits were excellent, especially the seniors who had been planning the theme for a year.”

The seniors pulled out to an insurmountable lead in the first 200 meters of the race. At the 800-meter mark, the juniors (“John Smith and the Indian Outlaws”) pulled even with the sophomore boat (“Super Heroes”). The seniors finished a boat length ahead in the end, ahead of the junior boat in second place and the sophomores in third. The winning boat was comprised of coxswain Meghan McCleskey, Chelsea Kautz, Alex Means, Jaclyn Rath, Hannah Miners, Jess Leidecker, Kristen Weinacker, Cati Harris, and Sarah Broeker.

The first race of the morning was at 10:20 AM and featured three boats of freshmen, with “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” making an early move for the race lead. The boat would hang on for a full-length victory over second-place finisher “Rainbow” and “Swans of Lake Hartwell” in third position.

The Tigers return to action next weekend to take part in the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta in Boston, MA.
