Second Ranked Golf Travels to Atlanta Intercollegiate

March 27, 2004

The Clemson golf team will travel to Stockbridge, GA March 29-30 to compete in the 2004 Atlanta Intercollegiate. There will be 12 teams competing in the tournament this year, highlighted by the No. 1-ranked Florida Gators. Clemson is ranked second in the nation in the latest coach’s poll and the latest Sagarin computer rankings. Conference foes Florida State and Georgia Tech, as well as in-state rival South Carolina, will also be in the field.

Eagle’s Landing Country Club will again play host to the event this year. The course is a 6,889-yard par 72 layout. The Tigers finished second in the event last year, carding a three-day total of 848, which equated to 16-under par. The team will look to better last year’s performance and earn its first victory of the year.

Seniors Matt Hendrix and Gregg Jones will lead the Tigers this weekend with the help of junior Jack Ferguson. The three preseason All-Americans were recently named to the Ben Hogan Award Watch List. Hendrix leads the team with a 71.10 stroke average, with Ferguson not far behind at 71.48. Jones has three top 10 finishes this season.

Sophomores Stephen Poole and Brian Duncan will complete the five-man squad this year at the Atlanta Intercollegiate. Poole is coming off his first career top 10 finish last week at the Chris Schenkel Invitational.
