Schmidt Recognized By SU2C

Rising senior righthander Clate Schmidt (Acworth, Ga.) has endured many ups and downs in the last few weeks (read details on his recent cancer diagnosis and draft selection HERE). He has shown courage and fortitude throughout his trying ordeal.

Schmidt has told his story on Fox News and ESPN2 in recent weeks, which was noticed by Stand Up To Cancer, a groundbreaking initiative created to accelerate innovative cancer research that gets new therapies to patients quickly and save lives now.

Thanks to a waiver from the NCAA, Schmidt accepted an invitation from Stand Up To Cancer to make promotional appearances during the 2015 Major League All-Star Game at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio. Schmidt will attend the Home Run Derby tonight before taking in the All-Star Game on Tuesday.

One player he will meet is Chicago first-baseman Anthony Rizzo. The major leaguer endured the same ailment (Hodgkin’s lymphoma) as Schmidt, who just wrapped up his third successful treatment Wednesday. Schmidt will also participate in a “Placard Moment” on the field during the Home Run Derby and is also slated to be announced during a similar recognition during the All-Star Game.

Schmidt’s entire family, including his mother, father, brother (Clarke, a rising sophomore righthander at South Carolina) and grandmother made the trek to Cincinnati.

Tune in to the Home Run Derby tonight at 8 p.m. and All-Star Game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to get a glimpse of Schmidt and the tremendous way he represents the #ClemsonFamily.
