Rowing’s Junior Class Wins Class Day Regatta

Oct. 17, 2009

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson rowing team held its annual Class Day regatta on Saturday morning, with the junior class coming out on top. The event was held under a drizzle and a 10 mph head wind, however the racing between the classes was competitive despite the conditions.

The freshman class got off to a fast start, followed closely by the seniors and juniors. At the 1,000 meter mark, the seniors and juniors were even and in the lead, with the freshmen one length back followed by the sophomores.

At the 1,250 meter mark, the juniors gained one length on the seniors and remained in the lead as they crossed the finish line. The seniors and freshmen were aggressive in the final 500 meters as they narrowed the gap, but ultimately fell short.

The final race order was as follows: Juniors – 7:10 Seniors – 7:19 Freshmen – 7:24 Sophomores – 7:33

“It is exciting to see Class Day turn into a competitive event, with the youth of the program holding their own,” said Head Coach Richard Ruggieri. “We will continue training and selection for the next two weeks, with selection being a challenge for the coaches. This is a good sign, as is a sizeable group of athletes competing for spots in our top boats.”

The Tigers will conclude the fall season at the Head of the Hooch on November 7-8.
