Rowing Successful at Head of the Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – The Clemson women’s rowing team finished first in three of four races, including both of the night sprint races, at the Head of the Oklahoma regatta in Oklahoma City, OK on Saturday. The Varsity 8+ crew took first place in both of their races while the Varsity 4+ crew took second in the first race, but came back to finish first in the night race. 

“This was a really great start to our season,” said Clemson head coach Robbie Tenenbaum. “We were able to beat a great Stanford program today and I am really proud of our entire team. The team has been working really hard since we started school last month, and the future is really bright for Clemson Rowing.”

The regatta’s unique format featured an afternoon head race of 4000 meters and then a night sprint race of a 500-meter length.

The Varsity 8+ crew finished the afternoon head race in first with a time of 14:42.534 followed by 2012 NCAA Championship participant Stanford in second with a 14:48.364 time. Oklahoma finished third with a 14:59.570 time.  The Varsity 4+ crew finished their head race with a time of 16:13.496 for a second place finish just behind Stanford, who finished with a time of 16:12.996.

In the night sprint race, the Varsity 8+ took first with a 1:26.900 time ahead of Stanford and Oklahoma, who tied for second with a time of 1:28.900. The Varsity 4+ crew edged out Stanford for first place with a time of 1:40.326 ahead of the Cardinal’s 1:41.009 in take the night sprint.

The Tigers also raced a Novice 4+ crew in the Varsity 4+ race at the Tail of the Tiger on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, SC on Saturday. The Novice 4+ crew finished in first place with a sizeable lead over a Clemson club crew and two Emory crews.

“We are extremely happy with how our novice rowers are progressing,” said coach Tenenbaum.

The Tigers will return to the water on Sunday, October 21, when they travel to Boston, MA, for the Head of the Charles.
