March 25, 2000

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson rowing team won four out of six races at the Clemson Invitational Saturday on Lake Hartwell. The Tigers’ Varsity 4+ teams opened the day placing first and second in the first event of the regatta. Clemson A recorded a time of 7:53.1, while Clemson B was second at 7:59.8. Northeastern placed third with a time of 8:17.8.

In the Second Varsity 8+ race, Clemson won with a time of 6:50.0, followed by Northeastern at 6:56.1. Tennessee was third with a time of 7:07.0, while ACC rival Duke placed fourth at 7:10.0. The Tigers also won the Third Varsity 8+ race, recording a time of 7:09.1. The Volunteers were second (7:17.0), followed by the Blue Devils (7:25.3). Northeastern placed fourth with a time of 7:44.3.

Clemson won the Second Novice race with a time of 7:42.1, followed by Tennessee with a time of 7:46.8. The Tigers finished second in the Novice 8+ competition, behind Northeastern who finished the race in 6:58.6. Clemson clocked in at 7:11.2, followed by Tennessee at 7:29.5.

In the final race of the day, the Varsity 8+, the Tigers placed second, trailing #12 Northeastern by 4.3 seconds. The Huskies recorded a time of 6:40.4, while Clemson finished in 6:44.7. The Volunteers were third at 6:51.3, followed by the Blue Devils at 6:58.8.

“It was a great day of racing with beautiful weather and nice water,” said Clemson head coach Susie Lueck. “Unfortunately, there were some challenges from pleasure boaters’ wakes. Today was a good opportunity for the Tigers to race against nationally ranked, competitive programs. We learned a lot in the Varsity 8+ race, which should help us in preparing for next weekend’s races in San Diego against the best crews on the West Coast. Today’s results showed the depth of the Tiger program, and proved we have more than nine fast rowers.”

The Clemson rowing team will compete at the San Diego Crew Classic April 1-2.
