Richardson Named Freshman All-American

Jan. 4, 2005

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (FWAA) – The Football Writers Association of America and Scripps announced their fourth annual Freshman All-America team on Tuesday morning during the association’s annual awards breakfast.

Clemson offensive tackle Barry Richardson was named to the first-team, the second time in three years Clemson has had a representative on the team. Justin Miller was a first-team selection at cornerback in 2002. Richardson was named first-team freshman all-American by The Sporting News earlier this year. He played 471 snaps and started seven games at offensive tackle this year, school records for a first-year freshman offensive lineman. Clemson had a 5-2 record in the seven games he started in 2004. Richardson and Georgia Tech kicker Travis Bell were the only ACC players selected.

The Freshman All-America team included three players from Michigan and two players each from Southern California, Arizona State and Auburn. There were six unanimous selections, including Heisman Trophy finalist, Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson.

In addition, UTEP coach Mike Price was named the top first-year coach at his school. The team and coach are selected by a group of writers led by FWAA second vice-president Mike Griffith of the Knoxville News-Sentinel, a member of the Scripps chain. Both true freshmen and redshirt freshmen were considered for the team and so noted.
