Quite a Week for Clemson Athletics

March 1, 2010

The week of February 22-28, 2010 was quite an impressive one for Clemson athletic teams, highlighted by the ACC Championship won by the Tigers’ women’s indoor track and field team. Below is a list of the week’s highlights.

Women’s Track Clemson’s women’s track program won the ACC indoor track and field championship at Blacksburg, VA with 145.5 points, over 50 points ahead of runner up Florida State. It was Clemson’s first women’s track and field championship since 1992 and second in history. The team had five individual champions and gained a sixth title in the 4X400 meters behind an all-freshman relay team that had a record time. April Sinkler led the way with individual titles in the long jump and the high jump.

Men’s Basketball Clemson’s men’s basketball team defeated Florida State, 53-50 in Tallahassee, FL. Clemson overcame a 13-point deficit in the first half to gain the victory behind a strong defense that forced 20 turnovers. Trevor Booker led the Tigers with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Andre Young made three three-point goals, including a half court shot at the end of the first half.

Clemson won Sunday’s game 12-6 thanks to a home run and five RBIs by Jeff Schaus and two home runs by Kyle Parker. Clemson is ranked in the top 15 of the college baseball polls.

Women’s Tennis Clemson opened the week with a victory over 14th-ranked Georgia Tech, Clemson’s fourth top 25 win this season. Three of the top 25 wins are against SEC teams, including 24th ranked South Carolina on Feb. 21 in Columbia. Clemson is ranked 12th as a team and Josipa Bek is ranked 18th individually.

Men’s Tennis Clemson swept Southern Mississippi and Navy on Saturday to improve its record to 10-0 this season. It is tied for the third best start in Clemson history, best since 1994 when Clemson also started 10-0.

Football While the Clemson football team is out of season, the program received national attention from the performance of former Tigers at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. C.J. Spiller ran an official time of 4.37, second best among running backs. Spiller is the highest rated running back and should be a first round draft choice in April.
