Practice Report, Aug. 19

CLEMSON, S.C. — Tuesday’s two-hour afternoon Clemson football practice closed the books on preseason camp. The Tigers begin classes on Wednesday and there will be no football activity that day. “Today’s practice put camp in he books,” head coach Dabo Swinney said. “It is now time to turn the page to Georgia” In many ways the Tigers did that on Tuesday.

“Today was not as physical as it has been. We are going to do a lot of mental preparation. We will take Wednesday off, then have our ‘mock game’ on Thursday, then have a regular practice on Friday. Saturday will be meetings, Sunday will be a day off then it will be game week.” Swinney was asked about the progress of his quarterbacks after practice.

“Cole Stoudt has done a nice job in the preseason. He has done everything we have asked. While he has not been the starter before, this is not his first rodeo. This is his fourth year in this system. Deshaun Watson has gotten better and better as we have gone along. He has a tremendous ceiling.  We have a good dynamic at quarterback.” One area that Swinney was concerned with when practice started back in the spring was the offensive line, in particular the tackle position. But, the development of Joe Gore has calmed Swinney’s nerves. “Joe Gore has been tremendous. I hoped that someone would step up at tackle and Joe has. He might be our best offensive lineman this camp.” Clemson is very strong on the defensive line with 12 returning lettermen, including consensus All-American Vic Beasley.

“Vic is ready to play,” said Swinney. “He is going to be a handful (for the opponent). At times this camp I have told coach (Marion) Hobby to take him out.  He has a great work ethic. I believe he is going to have an outstanding year.”
