Clemson had 29 first downs in today’s game, and lost. Thatmight be a record for most first downs in a loss by the Tigers, wedon’t have the time to research it at this point and make yourdeadline. But, we do know Clemson was 21-1 since 1986 when theTigers had at least 25 first downs heading into today’s game. Thelone defeat was at Maryland in 1992. Clemson lost that game eventhough they recorded 26 first downs. Terrance Huey scored a rushingtouchdown on a fumble-rewski play in the first half. He scored on a16-yard run. Not only was it his first touchdown, it was his firstcareer rush and his first offensive play from scrimmage. He hadplayed on special teams in the first two games. Clemson defensivetackle Nick Eason suffered a sprained ankle in the first half anddid not play in the second half. Clemson’s defensive MVP of 2000will be re-evaluated on Sunday. Eric Meekins and Matt Bailey alsosuffered pulled hamstrings in the game and will have treatment onSunday. The status of all three players is unknown for next week’sgame at Georgia Tech. Clemson quarterback Woodrow Dantzer completed25 of 34 passes for 251 yards in today’s game. The completion totalwas a career high, breaking the high of 23 he had at NC State in1999. The yardage total was his best since he threw for 252 atMaryland in 1999. The completion total tied for the fourth best inClemson history, and was just two off Brandon Streeter’s singlegame mark of 27 against NC State and Virginia Tech in 1999. Clemsonhas now lost four games at Memorial Stadium under Tommy Bowden andall four have been by three points or less. Clemson lost 13-10 toMarshall and 17-14 to Florida State in 1999. Clemson lost 31-28 toGeorgia Tech with seven seconds left in 2000. Today’s 26-24 losscame on a touchdown pass with one second left. Clemson is 6-1 underTommy Bowden the week after a regular season loss. Derrick Hamiltonhad nine receptions for 90 yards in today’s game, tying a Clemsonfreshman record for receptions in a game. Terry Smith had 9-84against Maryland in 1990, his red-shirt freshman year. Dantzler had10 consecutive completions at one point in the second half,including 7-7 for 61 yards on Clemson’s first scoring drive of thesecond half.
