North Carolina Defeats Clemson 4-1 in ACC Men’s Tennis Tournament

CARY, NC – North Carolina defeated Clemson 4-1 in the first round of the 51st Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament at Cary, NC Thursday afternoon.

With the win, North Carolina improves to 16-9 overall, while Clemson falls to 11-13 this season. North Carolina was the eighth seed in the tournament and the Tigers were seeded ninth. Nationally, the Tar Heels are ranked 35th by the ITA while Clemson is ranked 59th.

Today’s match was the 71st meeting between Clemson and North Carolina on the tennis courts. The Tar Heels lead the overall series 45-26. The first meeting between the two schools occurred in the 1931 season. UNC now leads the series 8-7 when the two teams meet at a neutral site.

The Tigers’ Kevin Galloway was victorious at number five singles as he defeated Luke Mojica of North Carolina, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The 2009 season marks the 100th year of men’s tennis at Tigertown. Clemson first sponsored men’s tennis in 1910 when two Tiger tennis players entered the annual state tournament. The first dual match was played in the 1921 season as the Tigers defeated Wofford 2-0 on April 28, in Spartanburg, SC.
