No. 8 Clemson Blanks VCU On First Friday

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson women’s soccer team continued its perfect start to the 2017 season, defeating VCU 1-0 on Friday night at Historic Riggs Field. With the win, Clemson improved to 5-0 overall, while the Rams slipped to 3-1.

“I didn’t think that we were at our best tonight,” said Head Coach Eddie Radwanski. “I was impressed with VCU’s work ethic and commitment and I think that brought a lot to the game. I credit our resilience to find a way to score a good goal and manage the game. I am pleased that we got the result, but we know that we need to play better.”

In the first half, Clemson took six shots while holding VCU to only two shots, however the Tigers and Rams went into halftime tied 0-0. After 61 minutes of play, Dani Antieau put the ball in play on a corner kick, finding the head of Jeni Erickson, who redirected the cross into the back of the net, giving Clemson a 1-0 lead. The goal marked Erickson’s second of the season, while Antieau earned her first assist of the season.

For the match, the Tigers outshot VCU 13-8, and 4-1 in shots on goal. Clemson took six corner kicks, converting on one of them, while the Rams had just four. Sophomore Sandy MacIver earned the clean sheet and her third win in net for Clemson this season.

The Tigers return to action Sunday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. as they head to Turner Soccer Complex in Athens to face Georgia.
