No. 22 Clemson Tops No. 73 Maryland, 5-2, on Sunday

March 25, 2012

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The 22nd-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team upped their ACC record to 4-1 on the year with a 5-2 win over No. 73 Maryland in College Park, MD on Sunday. The match was moved inside after rain delayed the match back an hour, and then forced it completely indoors. Clemson (11-6) improved to 30-3 all-time against the Terrapins (6-9, 0-5 ACC), who have lost each of their five conference matches this season. Clemson dropped the doubles point but bounced back to win five of the six singles matches in closing a tumultuous stretch which has seen the Tigers play just one home match in the last 12 dual match competitions. Clemson will play two in a row in the friendly confines this coming week, as they welcome No. 5 Duke and No. 11 North Carolina for key conference showdowns. Clemson’s only doubles win came from Romy Kölzer. Ciolkowski defeated Welma Luus, 6-3, 6-3 at flight four and moved to 16-9 on the year. Gumulya is now 4-1 in league play with her 6-3, 6-2 win on court five, while Kölzer is now 13-5 overall in her first season with the Tigers after claiming a 6-1, 6-1 win on court six over Jordan Hansbrough. Clemson returns to action on Friday against No. 5 Duke at the Romy Kölzer (CU) def. Jordan Hansbrough (MD), 6-1, 6-1
