CLEMSON, SC – Clemson freshman wide receiver Sammy Watkins has been named the National Freshman of the Year by Sporting News and has been named the top freshman in the nation by Todd McShay of ESPN.com. These are the third and fourth media outlets to name Watkins as the top freshman in the nation. Earlier he was named by Rivals.com and College Football News.

Watkins has been named a first-team Freshman All-American by CBS Sports, Sporting News, Rivals.com and College Football News.

The native of Ft. Myers, FL has 77 receptions for 1153 yards and 11 touchdowns this year. He has established a Clemson season record for yardage, breaking the previous record of 1084 set by Rod Gardner in 1999. His 11 touchdown receptions have tied the record held by Aaron Kelly in 2007.

Watkins is also fourth in the nation in all-purpose yardage. He had 345 all-purpose yards against Maryland to break the Clemson single game mark previously held by C.J. Spiller in 2009.
