Mitchell Joins Men’s Basketball

CLEMSON, S.C. — Shelton Mitchell, a 6-3 guard at Vanderbilt University last season, has signed a financial aid agreement to transfer to Clemson. Head Coach Brad Brownell made the announcement Monday. Per NCAA rules, Mitchell is required to sit out the 2015-16 season but has three seasons of eligibility remaining, beginning in 2016-17.

“We’re excited Shelton has decided to join our program,” Brownell said. “Our staff has known him a long time; we recruited him throughout his high school career. He’s a true point guard with great vision and passing skills, and loves to get others involved. Our guys will enjoy playing with him. He’s been a part of winning teams, both at the high school level and at Vanderbilt.”

A native of Waxhaw, N.C., Mitchell appeared in 31 games for the Commodores as a freshman in 2014-15. He earned 11 starting assignments and averaged 4.3 points and 3.3 assists per game Mitchell posted 103 assists for the season, tied for second in Vanderbilt history for a freshman.

Mitchell’s top game was a 46-minute effort against Yale on Jan. 3. He turned in 15 points and eight assists, season highs for both categories. He followed with a 10-point, five-rebound, four-assist performance in the Commodores’ SEC opener against Auburn. In all, Mitchell posted five or more assists in eight games at Vandy.

Mitchell was the NCPreps.com AA Player of the Year and Charlotte Observer Region Player of the Year in 2013 at Cuthbertson High School. He scored over 1,400 points and averaged 19.2 per game in three seasons, before transferring to Oak Hill Academy (Va.) for his final campaign.
