Men’s Tennis Downs Vanderbilt

March 17, 1999

NASHVILLE, TENN. – The No. 46 Vanderbilt men’s tennis team fell, 4-3, to No. 36 Clemson this afternoon at the Currey Tennis Center in Nashville. The Commodores slip to 8-5 with the loss, while the Tigers up their mark to 9-5.

The Commodores opened the match by winning the doubles point, but would quickly fall behind, 3-2, after the first four singles matches. The Tigers were victorious at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, while VU’s Andrew Nisker took a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 3 over Josh Goffi. Kyle Porter rallied after losing the first set to post a victory at No. 1 for Vanderbilt, leaving only VU’s Eddie Coates and Clemson’s Pablo Bellagamba on the court.

With the match even at 5-5, Bellagamba held his serve, but then Coates held without losing a point to force a tie breaker. With the tie breaker tied at 3-3, Bellagamba went on a run to take a 6-4 lead. Coates fought off the first match point, but double faulted on the second to give Bellagamba, and Clemson, the victory. It was the second time in three matches that a Vanderbilt match had all rested on the result of a Coates tiebreaker with a 7-5 score. On March 10, he beat No. 20 LSU’s Ed Rubin to give Vanderbilt an upset win in Baton Rouge.

Vanderbilt will travel to Georgia this weekend, playing Saturday at Georgia State, Sunday at No. 5 Georgia and Monday at No. 54 Georgia Tech.
