East Tennessee State Match Notes

  • Friday night’s match will be the regular season opener for both teams.
  • Clemson is ranked 11th nationally in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Preseason Poll. 
  • Clemson returns eight starters and five of it’s top six scorers from last season’s ACC Tournament championship team.
  • The Tigers are led by team captains Paul Clowes, Kyle Fisher and Andrew Tarbell this season. 
  • Clemson has nine freshmen on it’s roster this season. Three newcomers, Trey Langlois (Florida), Michele Bottari (South Carolina) and Johnny Heckman (Tennessee), were named Gatorade State High School Players of the Year before arriving at Clemson. 
  • The two teams last met on October 24, 2011 at East Tennessee State. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
  • East Tennessee State leads the all-time series between the two schools 1-0-1.

Mercer Match Information

  • Clemson and Mercer will meet for the first time since Aug. 30, 2013, a 2-0 Clemson win.
  • Clemson is undefeated all-time against Mercer, leading the series 9-0-0. All matches in the series have been played at Clemson.
  • Tommy McNamara, now playing with New York City FC of Major League Soccer, and Manolo Sanchez, now playing for the New York Red Bulls of MLS, scored Clemson’s two goals against Mercer in 2013. 
  • Mercer visits South Carolina on Friday before visiting Clemson on Sunday.
  • Clemson plays it’s first four matches of the regular season at Historic Riggs Field before traveling to Notre Dame for it’s first true road game of the season.
