Men’s Soccer Defeats Virginia

CHARLOTTTESVILLE, Va.–The Clemson men’s soccer team recorded its first ACC win of the season as it defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 2-1, on Saturday, October 16 at Klockner Stadium.

The win improves the Tigers to an overall record of 5-5-2 (1-1-2 in the ACC). Virginia falls to 7-5-1 overall (1-3-1 in the ACC).

Clemson fell behind 1-0 early in the second half. Cavalier Kyle Martino scored an unassisted goal at the 69:31 mark, on a 35-yard shot that sailed just past Tiger goalkeeper Josh Campbell.

The Tigers responded though, as they added two unassisted goals of their own. Senior Alan Woods (Burtonsville, MD) tied the score 1-1 with just under eight minutes to go in the match. Woods recovered a loose ball in front of the box and drove it home for his fourth goal of the season. Senior co-captain Matt Elliott (Tallhassee, FL) then netted the game winner and his first goal of the season at the 84:43 mark when he followed up a rebound into the back of the net.

The Tigers will be in action this Wednesday, October 20 when they will play host to Loyola of Chicago with the start time set for 7 p.m. at Historic Riggs Field.
